Hi, I need a birthday cake.
Lovely — happy to help you shape it. Who is the cake for, and which birthday is it?
It’s for my husband Tom. He’s turning 40 in November.
A 40th deserves something a bit special. What sort of thing is Tom into — hobbies, a team, a drink he loves? Anything that could give the cake a personality.
He loves whisky and dark chocolate. Not really a sweet-tooth, and definitely nothing pink or cartoony.
Noted: grown-up, not too sweet, no pink. That points towards a dark chocolate sponge — a whisky-caramel filling would suit him well — and a matte finish rather than lots of buttercream.
Roughly how many people will be eating it?
About 25, it’s a house party.
25 is comfortably a two-tier cake, which also gives us room for a bit of drama. Do you have a colour direction in mind? Matte black with gold is a classic for a 40th, but deep navy or a dark green would also work with whisky and chocolate.
Black and gold sounds right. Could it have his name on it?
Yes — gold lettering on the top tier reads well. Mirela has made cakes in this direction before; I’ve put two below so you can see her finish.
Would you like me to put together a rough concept image of Tom’s cake based on what we’ve discussed?

Yes please, that would be great.
Here’s a first concept: two tiers, matte black, dark chocolate sponge with whisky-caramel filling, brushed gold detail, “Tom, 40” in gold lettering and a small cluster of chocolate roses so it doesn’t feel stark.
Tell me what you’d change.

Two tiers, matte black, dark chocolate & whisky-caramel, brushed gold lettering, chocolate roses.A rough idea to react to — Mirela designs and confirms the final cake herself.
That’s very close. Could the lettering say “Forty & Fabulous” instead? And fewer roses.
Done — “Forty & Fabulous” in gold script across the top tier, and the roses kept to a small cluster on one side. Serves 25 comfortably.

Revised: gold script lettering, roses reduced to one small cluster, otherwise as before.A rough idea to react to — Mirela designs and confirms the final cake herself.
Perfect. What happens next?
When you’re ready, send this conversation to Mirela with the party date and how to reach you. She reads every enquiry herself, checks the date is free and comes back to you with the final design and price. Nothing is booked until she confirms.
